Well, it is not unusual to have nay sayers and folks that just do not want to see progress of any kind. I would frame conversations around (have a dry erase board or lecture pad so you can document responses boldly) 1) Why would we not want to be ...

North Carolina Schools Bring FISH! Alive

About six years ago, a friend gave educator Candace Call a gift, the book FISH!. She didn’t realize at the time that it was about to change the way she did her job, the way she performed as a leader and the way she lived her own life. At the time, she was Principal of Archdale Elementary in North Carolina and decided to give FISH! For Schools a try. “It just took off like wildfire and was the most incredible thing,” Principal Candace Call said. She was so impressed that she implemented FISH! in two more schools. She saw double digit increases in test scores, dramatic improvements in attendance and reductions in the number of bullying cases. “I made up my mind that I did not ever want to be principal at a school that did not practice The FISH! Philosophy,” Call said.

Is there a such thing as a waste of time?

I just recently got into the whole FISH! philosphy, maybe about a week ago I was nominated to be the FISH! Captain which I was super excited about. Before I became FISH captain everyone in my department and the surrounding departments joked around about it, simply using the phrase "we're just fishin" which I thought was so cute. They were… Continue

She Wins by a Nose

Gabrielle is wearing a clown nose. One of those bright red spongy numbers. As a matter of fact, everyone within striking distance of Gabbie is similarly adorned. It’s a bobbing sea of smiling faces, every new passer-by feeling the soft “pop” on their nose as Gabbie plops another comic proboscis on another unsuspecting victim. It’s ridiculous and I’m quite certain that if I were there, in the thick of the clown-nose festooning festivities, I would find a half-dozen completely plausible reasons wh… Continue

An Interest in a Positive Work Environment

It's my perception that budget cuts, a rapidly growing agency, a new demand for outcome based reasearch, and expansion into a high technology intrastructure, has created the greatest stress my agency has yet known. As things are amping up, it is my perception that people are shutting down and becoming more closed. More people shut their doors now. People don't seem as relaxed. I have noticed people making major decisions that effect others significantly without conversation or gathering informat… Continue
